learningBOX to Provide e-Learning System to Free Schools Free of Charge for One Year

Enriching Learning for Free School Children Improving IT Literacy of Instructors

learningBOX Corporation will begin a trial offering the starter plan (100 accounts for 33,000 yen) of its e-learning system, learningBOX, to free schools nationwide for one year, virtually free of charge, starting on March 1, 2024 (Friday).

Current Situation Surrounding Free Schools

On October 6, 2023, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) released the "Results of the 2022 Survey on Problematic Behavior, Truancy, and Other Student Guidance Issues of Children" which investigated the actual conditions of truancy and bullying.

According to the survey, the number of truant students in elementary and junior high schools has been increasing for 10 consecutive years, reaching a record high of 299,048 in FY2022, up 22.1% from the previous year. The number of non-attending high school students is also on the increase, at 60,575, up 18.8% from the previous year.

Under these circumstances, the importance of free schools has been recognized as a place for truant children and students to find a place to stay, a place to learn and engage in activities, and a place to support their social independence, and the number of such schools continues to increase.

ICT use in free schools urged; cost an issue

Schools are promoting "individualized and optimal learning" ("individualization of instruction" and "individualization of learning") under the GIGA school concept. Free schools have been providing individualized learning for students beyond the boundaries of grade levels and schools for some time. However, the use of ICT has become indispensable in further promoting "individualized and optimal learning.

According to the "2022 Survey on Student Guidance Issues, Including Problematic Behavior and Truancy of Children," only 10,409 of the truant students were treated as attending school when they were engaged in learning activities at home using ICT and other means. Therefore, if ICT can be actively used in free schools, it is expected that the number of students whose attendance is treated as attendance on the instructional record will further increase.

However, 80% of all free schools are operated by NPOs, voluntary organizations, or individuals, and without public support, they are in a difficult operating condition. Against this backdrop, the use of ICT has yet to make progress, and its widespread use is urgently needed.

LearningBOX, whose mission is "to create a future where anyone in the world can learn freely, anytime, anywhere," has decided to offer the Starter Plan (100 accounts) of the e-learning system "learningBOX" to free schools nationwide for one year. The trial will be free of charge for one year.

Provided e-learning system usage tickets worth 33,000 yen to free schools

From March 1, 2024 (Fri.) to March 31, 2025 (Mon.), we will conduct a campaign to provide free schools nationwide with a ticket for 100 accounts (33,000 yen) of learningBOX's Starter Plan.

We hope that our e-learning system, learningBOX, will be useful for realizing "individualized and optimal learning" and for enabling the treatment of attendance in the instructional record.

With learningBOX, you can easily turn videos and PDF documents into teaching materials. You can also create quizzes, which can be given at random to help students consolidate their memory. Students can also take periodic examinations at home. The reminder function can also be used to prevent students from forgetting to submit other materials. As a learning management system, it is easy to manage children and students.

For parents, the system also facilitates the distribution of newsletters, sharing of students' learning status, communication about how things are going at school, and the implementation and tabulation of various questionnaires related to parents' concerns, such as career counseling and attitude toward life.

Other examples include promoting a paperless office as part of staff work style reform, and early detection of problems by sharing information on children and students' attitudes and grades. Of course, business information can be easily shared and updated, and can also be used for staff training.
