Automate your Grading Tasks with AI-Powered Rubrics

New features are Coming on Wednesday, December 11, 2024

On Wednesday, Decempber 11, 2024, learningBOX, Inc. will release a new feature for its e-learning system, learningBOX, that automatically generates rubrics using AI and performs grading. In recent years, rubrics have gained attention as a method for assessing active learning and other student-driven educational activities. However, creating and grading rubrics can be time-consuming, leading to an increased workload for educators. This new feature not only significantly reduces the burden on teachers by automating the creation of evaluation criteria and grading for report assignments, but it also ensures transparency and fairness in the evaluation process. This innovative feature is expected to push the boundaries of digital transformation (DX) in education, with applications not only in educational institutions but also in corporate training programs.

Difficulty in Creating Evaluation Criteria Increases the Workload on Teachers

Rubrics are one of the methods used to evaluate the achievement levels of learners. It involves compiling a list of evaluation criteria and scales, which are used to clearly determine the extent to which learning objectives have been met. For example, in the evaluation of presentations or report assignments, using rubrics help clarify the evaluation standards, making it possible to conduct fair and objective assessments.

While rubrics have been attracting increasing attention due to the guidelines*, it has the issue of increasing the workload of teachers due to the time-consuming task of creating evaluation criteria and grading. A survey shows that more than half of the teachers in high schools cited problems in creating and utilizing lesson plans, evaluation plans, evaluation criteria, etc. as challenges in implementing goal-based evaluation.*

learningBOX Developed a Feature to Create Rubrics Easily

Rubric evaluation is well-suited for assessing learners' performance, making it a valuable tool not only in school education but also in corporate human resource development. We have received numerous requests from both schools and companies asking for the ability to use rubrics for report assignments and to add this functionality to learningBOX.
However, for those unfamiliar with creating and grading rubrics, setting the criteria and determining the grading process can be challenging. To address this, we have developed a new feature that leverages the AI capabilities of ChatGPT, allowing anyone to easily create evaluation criteria and perform grading. This new functionality will make rubrics more accessible and efficient for all users, further enhancing the learning experience in both educational and corporate settings.

Auto-Generated Rubrics with AI

1. Reduce the burden on faculty and staff
By simply inputting the text that educators wish to evaluate, AI will automatically generate appropriate rubric evaluation criteria. This significantly reduces the time and effort required to set up evaluation standards, allowing educators to focus more on teaching and less on administrative tasks.

2.Easy & fast evaluation
With the completion of AI-based automated grading, the evaluation process can begin immediately, leading to improved operational efficiency. Additionally, the reduction in variability of evaluation criteria ensures a fair and consistent assessment for all.

3. AI-powered rubrics in LMS
Currently, there are very few e-learning systems in Japan that offer the functionality of automatically generating rubric evaluations using AI. This makes it a pioneering initiative in the field.

This AI-powered rubrics added to the e-learning system, learningBOX, will make it easier for administrators to manage the learning progress of each individual learner. This new functionality allows for more efficient tracking and assessment, streamlining the management process.

Future Goals

With the newly implemented feature of automatic rubric-based assessment, the integration with Open Badges* has become even more seamless. For instance, learners can export their learning and test data from learningBOX in a CSV file and easily register it on an Open Badge platform. This allows for the simple issuance of Open Badges. This feature will be a big help for universities, companies, and certification exam providers that have adopted learningBOX. We support continuous learning and development by tracking each learner's achievements.

*3: Open badge...A digital certification issued online by a certification sponsoring organization or educational institution that digitizes the skills and knowledge acquired by the learner. (We are a member of the Open Badge Network)

The implementation of AI-generated rubrics holds great potential for use in various scenarios where consistent standards for learning assessment are required. This innovative functionality is expected to streamline the evaluation process, ensuring uniformity and fairness in educational assessments across different learning environments.
We will continue to support the learning of many people with the power of EdTech, aiming to create a future where anyone in the world can learn freely anytime, anywhere.
